Morton Morrell "Chilly Duathlon" Fundometer !!

Andy Cherry, Kevin Purdy and Richard Ward are in the final stages of training for the "Chilly Duathlon" : a gruelling Run - Cycle - Run off-road in rural Warwickshire on 6th Feb. We’re well equipped thanks to Mike’s Bikes who have offered a loan of demonstrator bikes. The goal (this is where you come in) is to raise money for CHIME. We’ll shortly be sending out a letter requesting donations. It would be great if we could raise a few pounds for music making at Clinton & get a few more members signed up to CHIME. Thanks in anticipation! Richard, Kevin, Andy

Kevin Purdy has had to withdraw from the event due to bursitis of the calx (bruised heel). Unfortunately this does occasionally happen with highly trained athletes (and Kevin). However the remaining 2 have redoubled their efforts. They have even been for a training run...
Nobody said it was clean fun!

6th February 2010. Well we survived!
On arriving at Moreton Morrell on a very cold damp morning (well it is the "Chilly Duathlon") we were greeted with some good news - we were guaranteed a top 100 finish position as there were less than 60 competitors! We registered and left our bikes in the "transition area" (aka tennis court).
Eying up the other competitors made us feel inadequate as many of them had special lycra suits, boxes full of kit for the changeover in the transition area etc.
Our supporters (The Cherry & Ward families) arrived just in time for the start and cheered us away - 3 circuits of a flat field. Both of us finished the first run section in the middle of the pack. As we had no special kit the transition was easy - helmet on, jump on bike and go! The cycle section had been re-routed to use local roads as the grounds were too wet but the first section was off road and steep. There were several spills as people descended the slippy muddy slopes. In no time we were on local roads, heads down making good time and holding our own in the middle of the pack. We were lapped by a couple of competitors. They must have had some special powers to go that fast - it’s not normal.
After two laps we arrived back at Moreton Morrell and had to cycle back up the slippy slopes (or get off and push in most cases). We "transitioned" again but with legs like lead it was tough getting running. With some helpful cheering from the "Cherry & Ward fan club" we got going and completed another 3 laps of the field to finish in a respectable one hour 25 minutes.
It was a bit like Chariots of Fire at the finish but slower and colder. I think we finished a bit below the middle of the pack but thankfully the official results haven’t been released yet.
Job done, lots of donations for Chime (THANK YOU!). Will I do it again? I’ll sleep on it - but there is a similar event in the summer, the ground should be firmer by then...
